Family Law

Do you need a family lawyer?

When marriages or de facto relationships break down, it can be very stressful for you. Having experienced, compassionate family lawyers in your corner can give you peace of mind, and help you achieve a fair arrangement going forward.

Everyone’s family is different, and the legal issues that might arise from a marriage breakdown are varied. You might need to consider:

  • Financial settlements on divorce.
  • Spousal maintenance (‘alimony’).
  • Separation agreements.
  • Property splits and division of marital assets.
  • Custody of children and shared parenting agreements.
  • Child support.
  • Pre-nuptial agreements.

What do you need to do?

Our specialist family lawyers offer an obligation-free consultation so that you can understand your options. Here are some things you can do to prepare for your family law legal appointment that will help us give you the right advice:

  • Bring a copy of your marriage certificate and children’s birth certificates.
  • Prepare a list of bank accounts, investments, stocks and shares belonging to you and/or your former partner (whether jointly or singly held), including any recent valuations if available.
  • List any superannuation accounts held by either you or your former partner, with copies of documents if possible.
  • Prepare a list of valuable goods owned by you and/or your former partner, including cars, jewellery, artwork and electronic equipment.
  • Arrange for a market valuation of any real estate you own, including the marital home and any investments.
  • List all your debts (including those held jointly and singly), including mortgages, personal loans and credit cards.
  • List your monthly expenses.
  • Bring records of income for you and your former partner, including recent tax returns and financial statements.
  • Bring any correspondence from your former partner or their family lawyer.

Don’t worry if you don’t have all of this information, or feel too overwhelmed at this stage. Our helpful family lawyers will talk you through the next steps and give you guidance on what information to gather.
